Q & A

Here's a Q & A I did recently for some radio:

Who are you?

F : Flash Atkins, Superhero

Where are you from?

F : Levenshulme, Manchester

How long have you been Flash Atkins?

F : All my life but it’s been difficult as with great power comes great responsibility. I sometimes wonder wonder if I make the grade.

Where does the name Flash Atkins come from what does it mean?

F : Flash Atkins is the name I was given by the children’s home where I was taken in as an orphan baby.

What makes you/band different?

F : I have the power to manipulate sound and drink vast quantities of booze.

Any special techniques you use when performing?

F : I have invented at least a dozen new notes, three new time signatures. Performance-wise, I need at least half a bottle of vodka before I go on stage / behind the decks. My cape, mask, boots and blue nylon tights outfit also tends to garner attention.

Who/what influences you and your music?

F : The Rocketeer, Batman (not Robin), Iron Man, Silver Surfer & Bananaman

Who else have you collaborated with?

F : 70s crooner Caspa Codina sang on my new single, The Sweetshop. I’ve done tracks with Danielle Moore from Crazy P, lady’s man George Demure, LA rapper Sean Revron and Japanese singer Leilani. Kathy Diamond has also just written me a song so we’re working out when it can be recorded.

What is the lyrical meaning behind the song we are promoting to the media?

F : You’d have to ask Caspa but as he’s a bit of a wrong ‘un I’d guess that The Sweetshop is something to do with sex or / and drugs.

Your Best gig? Why?

F : Probably the one at The Coach and Horses after being released from compulsory Rehab (by Her Majesty’s courts, it was that or the nick) for obvious reasons. Other than that, I’m resident DJ at Into The Valley in Hebden Bridge (a hippy town in the middle of nowhere) which is run in a labour club and goes OFF!

What’s the worst thing someone could say about the band/you?

F : “I know your real identity”…I thought my cover was blown but they were miles off. Other than that, the usual insults like “you’re pissed”, “when did you last have a shower”, “no you can’t have 20p for the bus home as you’ll only spend it on booze”.

Best thing that’s happened so far in your musical career?

F : Being signed by We Are Woodville as the advance prevented me from being evicted.

If you could take 3 things to a desert island with you what would they be?

F : Micro-brewery, tobacco plants and solar TV.

What do you think of the music industry and present, do you think it is giving more opportunities to artists like you?

F : There seems to be loads of music about but nobody’s paying for it….you haven’t got a quid I could lend have you? I’ll give it back tomorrow, I promise.

Which current artists do you rate?

F : I’m digging Dubstep all the way with Martyn and Burial the frontrunners. I’m also liking the Drum and the Bass with Commix, Lynx, Instru:mental....and of course Girls Aloud (except the ginger minger)

Video Snippet

and it really is a snippet from my new video.....

Amsterdam

Lesson 1 : Don't wander round the Red Light District in Amsterdam after 2 am.
Lesson 2 : Don't keep ALL your money and plane tickets on you.
Lesson 3 : Airports get boring after 29 hours.

So I got mugged for all my moolah in the Dam on friday night, had to hitch to the airport and blag my ticket home on sunday afternoon and wait and wait and wait. There was a time when I would have been the one bringing the muggers to justice and now I'm on the receiving end, how times have changed.....
