CHRIMBO Q & A feat. Flash Atkins, Ralph Myerz, Mat Playford, DATG, Proviant Audio & Kahuun for Paper Recordings

Q: What were your Top three tracks of 2010?
FA: Isoul8 & Mark De Clive – Stop Bajon / Lonesome Echo Production – Spirit of Drums / Flash Atkins – Make Your Move.
RM : Ciscoe – Elevators / Black Room – XTC / Radioslave – I Don’t Need A Cure For This (Kenny Larkin Remix)
MP: Kosmischer – Ruckenwind / Lucien N Luciano – Behind My Soul
Yard Dawg – Mat Playford & Tim Deluxe
PA: I’m all stuck in the seventies, so it’s hard to say… Of course, some lovely music has been coming out of 2010 as well. The Samps’ self titled debut on Mexican Summer has been running a lot on my iPod, so I have to mention the tracks “Peppergood” and “Yellow Jacket”, which is pretty rude, sample-based disco/R&B dopeness. Erykah Badu’s album New Amerykah Part 2 has been one of my favorites this year as well. Tracks “Umm Hmm” produced by Madlib and “Love” produced by J Dilla in his late years.
K: Soulphiction – Deranged / Stac – Tip (Royce Wood Jnr Remix) / Seiji vs. Bembe Segue – Get it Together
DATG : All this time – Proviant Audio / Made for each other – Junkie XL / Something Good Can Work (Twelves remix) – Two door cinema club

Q: What are your plans for 2011?
FA: A Day In The Life film, mucho musica and an album dropping in the Autumn. Also getting very pissed daily, scabbing free drugs and trying to live in a house rather that a campervan, this winter’s been harsh!
RM: Finishing and releasing three albums! “Super Sonic Pulse” with guests like George Clinton and Snoop Dogg / “Outrun (Music4LateNightDrivez)” for night time experiences. and producing the new R.E.C. album “DiscoTech” with Eddie Da Bass and Carina Deejay. Then moving to California and make a lot of new music while drinking wine.
MP: Obsessive focus.
PA: Release my debut album on Paper!!!! Do a lot of remixes. produce a lot, arrange my tracks for the Royal Norwegian Navy Big Band (29 horns!) and do some amazing shows – including the by:Larm Festival in February…..and last but not least graduate from High School!!
K: Get my finger out and try to complete some of the 219 half-finished projects. There should at least be enough for my first ever album
DATG : Finally learn the bloody trumpet, get some more music released, get freaking married.

Q: What was your best Night-Time experience of 2010?
FA: It was in Amsterdam before I got mugged but that’s what happens when you go on the specialist unlicensed sex market.
RM: Watching the sunset at the beautiful Utkantfestival with my fiancée, and afterwards playing disco with Ciscoe all night long.
MP: Touring with We Love.
PA: Must be some of the summer festivals. All were super great but the best was probably the Slottsfjell Festival were I did a DJ-set along with bass, percussions and some horns in front on over 3000 funky people. My bassist claims he french-kissed about 6 girls in the audience during the show. After the show he stated “Mathias, my life started right now…”
K: All of the 8 HiFi Terapi nights at Cafe Opera in Bergen.
DATG : I’m going to hedge my bets and say it will take place on 18th Dec – Lindstrom, Tensnake, Crazy P, Ralph Lawson = Yes.

Q: Your worst Night-Time experience?
FA: Getting back to blighty after said incident.
RM: I’m not really into bad night- time experiences. I always keep it 100% good and hang out with the good people.
MP: Cant think of any bad vibes man.
PA: Nothing I would want the world to know, I guess. Often synonymous with too excessive consumption of liquids containing alcohol.
K: Drink expensive wine with Prime Minister Flash Atkins and solve all the problems together.
DATG : Hm, so few nights out these days, I make sure they’re all good!

Q: If you were leader of the world, what would you do next?
FA: Make all those lazy students get a proper job rather than bloody moaning all the time.
RM: 1. Hire Johan Galtung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Galtung) as the chief of all the technical economical political stuff.
2. Then make sure Final (www.Final.no ) and Kinee (Kinee.no) get listened to a lot.
3. After all this hard work and tough decisions make January the annual month of chilling out and drinking wine.
4. Make a lot of money on Aspirin in February.
5. Spend that money on buying everybody a turntable and a stack of vinyl with music so beautiful that people would want to listen to it at least for an hour a day. An album on vinyl a day, keeps the doctor away.
6. Spend all the money saved on medical bills on good sound systems in clubs.
MP: Well where do you start? I’d defo try to sort them Somalian pirates.
PA: Spread the fonk!!!
K: Drink expensive wine with Prime Minister Flash Atkins and solve all the problems together.
DATG : If I were leader of the world, I’d have a day off. Or delete the internet – that would be fun. Or in an ideal, nonrealistic world, redistribute a fraction of the profits made by the various energy companies to those in more immediate need…

The Superhero past his prime, Flash Atkins is back with a timeless release of deep slow burning soul that shows off his chops as a producer; and some heavyweight mixes to boot. Featuring Crazy P’s Danielle Moore at her sultry best, the original has live bass, drums, guitar, horns and guitar plus Rhodes and electronics all wrapped up in a killer 90BPM 4/4 groove.

Atjazz pitches things up for some classic deep house, which he does so well. It’s got an afro groove, shuffling percussion, gorgeous pads and keys that tease before the bass hits. He then brings out the song before taking out the bass and stripping it back down to make a hypnotic middle section reminiscent of Global Underground’s The Way. The bass and keys then re-emerge for the soulful end….ahhhhh.

Ashley Beedle, a man who’s had his sticky paws in some of the best dance music of the past twenty years takes the track in to psychedelic rock direction. He gives it a heavyweight drum groove and showcases Danielle’s vocals, using plenty of the original parts but adds some heavily effected guitars and percussion.

The Reprise strips the original mix of all its beats and let’s Danielle’s vocals soar over the Rhodes; and finally Atjazz and Ashley Beedle’s dub are included for those allergic to vocals!

ZUBB Chart – Entry Number 27 - Danielle Moore takes the lead over a simmering soul stew. Ashley Beedle turns up the heat.

Into The Valley
Saturday, 29 May, 2010
9.00pm – 1.30am
£5 in advance (before 10-pm on the night)
£6/£8 (after 10pm)
The Trades Club, Hebden Bridge

Experimental club night continues to provide leftfield nu-disco, flat caps and whippets…

Into The Valley presents Lancashire’s Demdike Stare (live) and DJ MLZ

There’s a line-up to shake Hebden to its valley roots with a band from way over the Yorkshire / Lancashire border. Fresh from Manchester’s FutureEverything festival, Demdike Stare, named after Pendle's most famous witch, is the occult new project from Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty, both obsessive vinyl collectors and two individuals operating at the heart of Manchester's fragmented music scene.

Miles is probably better known as Modern Love's DJ MLZ or one half of Pendle Coven. Sean Canty is the dedicated digger behind the Haxan events and a member of the hugely respected Finders Keepers crew of vinyl vultures. This incredible project tracks the sonic leylines of cult soundtracks, classic House templates, punctured dub and modified techno with a proper Lancastrian twist, into asymmetric music that quite brilliantly defies categorisation.

Demdike Stare will be bringing their melting pot of sounds to the Hebden massive live and on wax as DJ MLZ takes over. Resident support comes from local jocks Flash Atkins (PAPERecordings / We Are Woodville) and Chris Price (What the Freak)

The last few Into The Valley’s have been a lock out so tipping a wink to the faithful in these credit-crunching times entry is £5 in advance, online and on the door before 10pm, then £6/£8 thereafter.

Flash Atkins…Superhero, boozer and welfare sponger is back with a remix package of Chant No. 1 (I Don’t Need This Pressure On) originally by 80s chubsters Spandau Ballet.

Chant No.1 features Crazy P’s Danielle Moore on vocals and was out last year as part of the Fags & Booze EP. It’s quirky nu-disco got props from Chris Coco, Groove Armada, Leo Zero & Cosmic Disco. The tracks in this package are the result of a remix competition that We Are Woodville ran.

Manchester’s DATG have created side-chained piece of deep, dark disco that guaranteed for dancefloor mayhem, especially after the drop!

New kid on the block Aaron’s Smith’s Stop The Car remix goes down the disco edit route by cutting things up and piecing it back together to ride the groove with snatched efx.

It’s a quirky all round a package that hits the disco zetgeist!

Jim Stanton (Horsemeat Disco) - GREAT! In the set , what good sound. I still play the original and will def be giving this a good play. Love it!

Stuart Knight (Toolroom) - I think i'm becoming a BIG FLASH ATKINS fan !!! Aaron Smiths mix is the one for me here.

Billy Scurry - Killer, been hammering the original, great package...ten stars

Untitled Music - Funky nu-disco house 4/4 beater tunes are the stuff superheroes are made of and Flash is no different! With Danielle Moore on vocals the two tracks are a heady blend of intoxicating beats, synth chords and a slap of soul to the grooves!

Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) - stop the car mix - odd but interesting

Murray Richardson - Love this, always loved this & love the remixes too!

Jonny Miller (Jus’ Listen) - Flash is a loser but this tune is a winner! Love it, silky disco for silky discos

Beats in Space - liking the DATG mix

Henri Kohn - Wooo wooo, nice one, feelin it big ups

Joakim - Interesting mix by DATG, unexpected.

Martin Brew - DATG mix is a winner...suitably wonky enough for me...love it!

Advokkat - Great & crazy track - It s a funny track - I like that

Ewen Beginerz - Brilliant, i reaally like this.

Chant Number 1 (I Can’t Keep This Pressure On) was put out to a remix competition and the brilliant results are out in April. DATG go deep and dark while Aaron Smith does disco on yo ass.

Gigs
Flash Atkins has been let loose in a new residency that could well end in tears due to the amount of booze available within arm’s reach. He can be found at Purple Chrome in the top room of The Hole in the Wall every second Friday of the month along with DJ Denaji. It’s free in and like the best school disco you’ve ever been to, soundtracked by soul, house, afro, reggae, pop, jungle, latin and disco.
You can also catch him at Into The Valley on May 29 and at the Futuresonic Festival.

New DJ Mix to Download
There may not be such a thing as a free lunch but there certainly IS such a thing a free mix. It’s another eclectic mix of laidback tune-age that's got plenty of dubstep, balearic covers, French rapping, the immense Don Cavalli, one of Hot Chip and some gypsy guitar all strung together using Flash's super human sound manipulation power.
